What should a renewable energy installation guarantee cover?
A renewable energy installation guarantee should cover the workmanship, the equipment supplied and the agreed duration, while clearly stating exclusions and the process for reporting a fault. It should also explain who handles manufacturer claims and what support remains available after the installation is complete.
A sound renewable energy installation guarantee should protect the complete installation, not just an individual panel, inverter, heat pump or battery. It should identify what we installed, state how faults will be dealt with, and make clear where the manufacturer’s warranty takes over.
Start with the installation itself
The guarantee should cover faults caused by poor fitting, incorrect connections, inadequate commissioning or defective installation work. That includes the parts that are easy to overlook, such as roof fixings, cable routes, isolators, pipework, controls, mounting frames and weatherproof penetrations.
A solar installation should not be covered only up to the inverter. The document should explain whether it also includes the mounting system, DC and AC cabling, protection devices, monitoring equipment and any battery connection. For an air source heat pump, check that the scope includes the outdoor unit, cylinder, controls, hydraulic connections, condensate arrangements and associated electrical work.
Older homes need particular care here. A guarantee should still apply if the installation involves slate roofs, solid walls, unusual cable routes or existing heating pipework. If we recommend additional work before installation, the written quotation should identify it rather than leaving the guarantee dependent on assumptions.
Separate workmanship from equipment cover
Manufacturers usually provide their own warranty for equipment. That is different from the installer’s guarantee. The manufacturer may cover a failed inverter or heat pump component, while the installer’s guarantee covers the fitting, connections and commissioning that sit around it.
The paperwork should name each covered item and identify the responsible party. It should say who contacts the manufacturer, who supplies replacement parts, and who pays for labour involved in removing and refitting a failed component. A replacement part may be free under a manufacturer warranty, but the labour and access arrangements may not be.
It should also distinguish a product warranty from a performance promise. Solar panels normally have technical output information from the manufacturer, but that does not mean the installer guarantees a fixed annual generation figure. Generation depends on roof orientation, shading, weather, system settings and electricity use. A responsible guarantee explains what is covered without promising results that the property cannot reliably deliver.
Check the start date and duration
The document should state when the guarantee begins. That might be the commissioning date, the date the system is handed over or another clearly defined point. It should not leave the start date to an invoice, verbal agreement or an unclear manufacturer registration process.
Different parts may have different periods of cover. The installation work, inverter, battery, heat pump and controls may not all follow the same term. Ask for a schedule showing the period for each item, rather than relying on a single headline duration.
If the property changes hands, check whether the guarantee passes to the next owner. Some guarantees do this automatically; others require notification or registration. A transferable guarantee can matter when a home is sold, particularly if the buyer needs evidence that the system was installed correctly.
Read the exclusions carefully
Exclusions should be specific and reasonable. They may cover damage from flooding, impact, rodent damage, unauthorised alterations, incorrect operation or work carried out by another contractor. Normal wear, consumable items and problems caused by a wider electrical or heating system may also sit outside the installation guarantee.
That does not mean every fault can be excluded as “maintenance”. The document should explain the difference between routine servicing, cleaning or firmware updates and a defect in the installation. For example, a blocked filter may be a maintenance issue, while a leaking connection made during installation may be a workmanship issue.
Solar panels, batteries and heat pumps also depend on the property’s wider systems. An old consumer unit, undersized radiators, poor insulation, restricted airflow or an unsuitable internet connection can affect operation. The guarantee should identify any conditions that must be maintained, and we should explain those conditions before the work starts.
Make commissioning and handover part of the record
A proper handover gives you evidence of what was tested and how the system was set up. The record should include commissioning details, model and serial numbers, settings, test results, certificates and operating instructions.
For solar and battery systems, that may include the agreed export settings, monitoring account details, emergency shutdown instructions and the location of isolation switches. For a heat pump, it should include control settings, flow temperatures, frost protection information and the maintenance tasks needed to keep the system operating correctly.
MCS certification is relevant where an installation is eligible for the Smart Export Guarantee or a Boiler Upgrade Scheme application. The MCS documentation supports the required installation record; it does not replace the installer’s own guarantee. Keep both sets of paperwork with the property records.
Understand what happens when something goes wrong
The guarantee should give a clear method for reporting a fault and list the information needed to investigate it. A useful process may ask for the installation address, commissioning date, system details, photographs, an error code or a description of what has changed.
It should explain what happens next: whether we diagnose the problem remotely, arrange a site visit, or refer an equipment fault to the manufacturer. It should also state whether the guarantee covers diagnosis, access equipment, replacement parts, labour and recommissioning.
Do not alter wiring, refrigerant circuits or system controls before the installer has assessed the fault. Unauthorised work can make the cause harder to establish and may affect the cover. Simple user checks, such as confirming an isolation switch has not been turned off, should only be carried out where the handover instructions allow them.
Ask about ongoing responsibilities
A guarantee may depend on sensible maintenance, but the requirements should be practical and written down. You should know which filters need cleaning, when a service is recommended, whether monitoring must remain connected and how to keep access clear around an outdoor unit or battery.
For oil- or gas-linked heating systems, legally required servicing and inspection obligations may sit alongside the renewable installation guarantee. We explain which parts of the wider system need separate attention, so a routine service is not confused with a guarantee claim.
Before accepting a quotation, ask to see the guarantee wording rather than relying on a salesperson’s summary. Check the covered equipment, start date, duration, exclusions, transfer arrangements and fault procedure. The final paperwork should match the system installed at your property and remain available long after the commissioning visit.

A guarantee should explain what happens if a covered fault cannot be repaired. Look for a clear remedy, such as repairing the installation, replacing a defective component or correcting the original work at no extra cost.
It should also say when the guarantee ends after remedial work. If a cable, connection or mounting point is replaced, ask whether that repair carries its own period of cover. This prevents uncertainty if the same fault returns later.
