How long does commercial electrical installation take?

Commercial electrical installation timescales vary with the building’s size, system complexity, access and whether existing circuits need replacing. We assess the premises first, then provide a clear programme covering preparation, installation, testing, certification and handover.

There is no standard duration for a commercial electrical installation. A straightforward addition may be completed in a single visit, while a new installation or full rewiring can take considerably longer and may need to be carried out in stages. The final timescale depends on the building, the electrical design, access, the equipment involved and the testing required.

A small commercial job might involve adding circuits, sockets, lighting, machinery supplies or an additional distribution board. If the existing system has enough capacity and the cable routes are accessible, the physical work is relatively contained. We still need to allow time to isolate circuits safely, protect the working area, test the installation and issue the required certification.

A larger installation takes longer because several activities happen in sequence:

  • We inspect the existing supply, distribution equipment, earthing and wiring.
  • We establish the electrical load and identify any equipment that needs a dedicated circuit.
  • We agree cable routes, containment, distribution board positions and access arrangements.
  • We coordinate the work with other trades, building works and the operation of the premises.
  • We install the equipment and cabling in the agreed sequence.
  • We test each circuit, investigate any faults and complete the certification and handover information.

Rewiring an occupied building usually takes longer than wiring an empty one. Furniture, stock, office equipment and customer areas all affect access. Where the premises must remain in use, we can plan sections of the work around the business’s layout and operating requirements. That can reduce disruption, but it may extend the overall programme because circuits cannot always be isolated together.

Older premises can add further work. The existing wiring may not match current requirements, the distribution board may need upgrading, or cable routes may be hidden behind solid walls, ceilings or older building fabric. We identify these issues before setting out the installation sequence, rather than treating them as unexpected work once the job has started.

The equipment being connected also affects the programme. A supply for a few sockets is different from an installation serving commercial kitchen equipment, workshop machinery, refrigeration, heating controls or multiple work areas. We check whether the incoming supply and existing distribution equipment can support the proposed load. If they cannot, the quotation will explain what needs to change before the new circuits can be used.

Some parts of the programme depend on decisions or permissions outside the installation itself. These can include landlord approval, building access, specialist equipment dimensions, coordination with a utility provider or work by another contractor. We flag those dependencies during planning so the installation is not presented as shorter than it can realistically be.

Testing is part of the installation, not an optional final task. We test the circuits, protective devices, continuity, insulation resistance, polarity and earthing arrangements as appropriate to the work. Any issue found during testing must be corrected before the system is handed over. The certification and test results then provide the paperwork needed for the building’s records and future maintenance.

The most useful timetable comes after we have seen the premises and understood the scope. The time on site is only part of a commercial installation programme. Before work starts, we may need to confirm equipment sizes, agree access arrangements and plan safe circuit shutdowns. Those steps can affect the calendar date even when the physical installation is straightforward.
