What information do you need to recommend the right portable solar generator?
The right portable solar generator depends on what you need to run, the starting power of those appliances, how long you need them operating and how often you can recharge the unit. We’d also need to know whether you’ll charge it from mains electricity, portable solar panels or a vehicle, and where you’ll use and store it.
To recommend a portable solar generator accurately, we need to understand how you intend to connect it, what electrical equipment already exists, and which compromises matter most to you. A unit that works well for charging devices can be unsuitable for a boiler, freezer or home circuit.
Tell us how you want to connect it. A portable power station normally supplies individual appliances through its own outlets. It does not automatically power the circuits in a house. If you want backup through selected sockets or circuits, we need to know whether a changeover switch or another approved connection already exists. Plugging a power station into a normal wall socket to energise the house can send electricity back into the wiring and create a serious hazard. Tell us your priorities and budget. Some households mainly want the lowest purchase cost. Others will accept a heavier or more expensive unit for a stronger inverter, additional outlets, a larger solar input or the ability to add battery modules later. Knowing which features matter prevents us from recommending capacity or functions you will not use.
Noise can be important in a kitchen, study or bedroom, even though a battery power station is quieter than a fuel generator. We can also consider the display, controls, app requirements and whether everyone who may use it needs a simple plug-in arrangement.
