Electricity use affects home solar panel cost through the amount of energy you need, when you use it and how that use may change. Two homes with similar roofs can need different systems because their daily electricity patterns are different.

Your annual bills give us a starting point, but the total yearly consumption is not enough on its own. A home that uses most of its electricity during daylight can use more solar power directly. A home that is empty during the day may need battery storage or a different approach to make better use of the generation later.

We look at bills across the year rather than relying on one month. Winter electricity use can rise because lighting, heating controls and other equipment run for longer. Summer use may increase if you use fans, pumps or other appliances. This seasonal pattern helps us avoid sizing the installation around an unrepresentative bill.

Your regular appliances also matter. An induction hob, electric shower, tumble dryer, home office or workshop can create short periods of high demand. These loads may affect the inverter and electrical design, even if they do not use much energy across the whole year. We also ask about equipment you plan to add, such as an EV charger, electric heating or a heat pump.

Planned changes are important because a system sized around today’s bills may be less suitable after your electricity use increases. We can allow for a future EV, for example, but we should not assume that every planned appliance needs to be installed at once. The quotation should show which parts are included now and which changes might need further electrical work later.

A battery changes the cost in a different way from adding panels. Its capacity relates to how much electricity you are likely to use after the panels stop generating, while its power rating relates to the appliances that may run at the same time. A larger battery is not automatically better if there is not enough surplus solar electricity to charge it or enough evening demand to use that stored energy.

We use your consumption pattern to consider whether battery storage is justified, rather than adding one by default. If your home uses a lot of electricity after dark, storage may form a larger part of the installation. If you are usually at home during the day, direct use of solar generation may reduce the need for as much storage.

Export also affects the design decision. Some unused generation can be sent to the grid, but exporting electricity does not make the panels free or remove the need to consider when you use power. Your panels and battery are installed under MCS certification, which allows us to make a Smart Export Guarantee application on your behalf when the system is eligible.

The cost can also change when high electricity use requires alterations around the solar installation. An EV charger, battery or additional electrical equipment may need space in the consumer unit, suitable protection and a check of the existing cabling. We include those practical points in the design instead of treating the panels as a separate item.

During the survey, we review the available roof area, orientation, shading, cable route and consumer unit alongside your electricity information. We then explain the likely panel arrangement, inverter and battery options, and any work needed to connect them safely. A written quotation sets out the recommended equipment and work before anything starts, so you can compare the cost with the way you expect to use the system.

The most useful information to prepare is a year’s electricity bills, details of large appliances and any plans for an EV, electric heating or other significant loads. That gives us a more realistic basis for the design than the size of the roof or a standard package alone.

The amount on your electricity bill isn’t the same as the electricity your panels need to replace. It includes a standing charge and the price you pay per unit, so we use the annual kWh figure when assessing the system size.

This gives a clearer comparison between your present consumption and the solar generation your roof could produce. It also stops a temporary tariff or an unusually high bill from leading to an unsuitable panel recommendation.
