How long does a 7kW EV charger installation take?
A straightforward 7kW EV charger installation can often be completed in one day, provided the electrical supply, cable route and mounting position are suitable. We confirm the timescale after checking the property, as a longer cable run, consumer-unit changes or other electrical work can add time.
The installation time depends mainly on the cable route and the condition of the existing electrical supply. A clear route from the consumer unit to the parking space usually keeps the work straightforward. A long, concealed or outdoor route can add preparation and fitting work.
Before installation
Your home needs enough capacity for the charger alongside the cooker, heating, immersion heater and other larger loads. We check the consumer unit, earthing arrangements, protective devices and the available supply before we confirm the installation plan.
The parking position matters too. We look at where the charger can be mounted, how the cable will reach it and whether it needs to pass through walls, a loft space, an outbuilding or external cable protection. If the cable needs to cross a garden or driveway, we explain any trenching or surface work before we start.
Older properties sometimes need additional electrical work before a 7kW charger can be connected. That might include improving the earthing, replacing outdated protective equipment or upgrading the consumer unit. The age of the house alone does not decide this; the condition of the installation does.
What happens on the installation day

- We install the dedicated circuit, cable, protective equipment and charger.
- We secure and label the equipment, then test the installation.
- We commission the charger and explain its controls, indicators and basic operation.
Testing is an important part of the job. We check the circuit, protective devices and charger operation rather than treating the installation as complete once the unit is fixed to the wall. We then provide the relevant electrical certification and records for the work.
What can make the work take longer?
A longer cable run does not always cause a problem, but it can require more containment, drilling or careful routing. A detached garage, external wall or parking space away from the house may need a more involved cable route. We also allow for extra work where the consumer unit has no suitable capacity or where the existing earthing needs attention.
Access can affect the practical timing as well. Furniture, fitted cupboards, thick walls, loft insulation and difficult outdoor surfaces can make a concealed route more involved. We discuss these points during the assessment, so the planned work reflects the property rather than an assumed layout.
Can the charger be installed if the supply is limited?
Not every home needs a supply upgrade. We first consider the actual demand on the property and whether suitable load management can control the charger when other high-load appliances are running. If the incoming supply or service arrangement needs attention, we explain that separately instead of proceeding with an unsuitable connection.

The most useful information for an accurate installation plan is a photograph of the consumer unit, the proposed charger position and the route between them. We can then identify likely complications before arranging the work.
The 7kW rating describes how much power the charger can deliver to the car. It does not determine how long the installation takes. The property’s layout and existing electrical equipment have a greater effect.
