How much electricity does smart lighting control use?

Smart lighting control uses a small amount of electricity while connected and ready, even when the lights are off; the exact amount depends on the bulbs, switches and hub. It can still reduce overall lighting use by switching lights off automatically or only when a room is occupied, but the saving depends on how the system is used.

Smart lighting control normally adds a modest amount to household electricity use, but the total depends on what remains powered and how the lights are used. The lamps themselves usually account for far more consumption than the control equipment.

Smart bulbs stay powered even when the light appears to be off. They need a small electrical supply so they can receive commands from an app, sensor or voice assistant. If someone switches the circuit off at the wall, the bulb stops using electricity, but it also stops being smart until power is restored.

A smart switch behaves differently. The lamp is disconnected when the switch turns it off, while the switch’s internal electronics continue to draw a small amount of power. This allows the switch to receive commands and operate its schedules. The amount varies between models and depends on whether the switch needs a neutral connection or uses another design.

A hub or bridge adds another continuous load. This equipment may coordinate several lights, connect them to the home network and store automation settings. A router may also be involved, although its entire electricity use should not be counted as a lighting cost because it serves other devices as well.

Your hallway light may be left on because nobody remembers to switch it off, while a landing light may be used briefly several times each evening. Occupancy sensors, timers and daylight settings can deal with those patterns more consistently. The saving comes from reducing the time or brightness of the lamp, not from the smart control itself.

Automation can also increase consumption if it turns lights on unnecessarily. A sensor aimed at a busy walkway may trigger lights whenever someone passes. A schedule that ignores daylight can illuminate rooms that already have enough natural light. Some people also use brighter scenes or leave decorative lighting on for longer because controlling it is convenient.

The most reliable way to calculate the cost is to use the equipment’s measured power and your electricity tariff. Energy is charged in kilowatt-hours. Multiply the equipment’s power in watts by the hours it operates, then divide by 1,000 to find its kilowatt-hour use. Multiply that result by the rate on your electricity bill.

For a device that remains on continuously, use the number of hours in the period you are checking. For a light, include the time it is actually illuminated at each brightness level. A smart bulb’s standby use needs to be included separately because it continues while the lamp appears off.

Product specifications can show standby consumption, but they are not always presented in the same way. An energy monitor can measure a plug-in hub or lamp. A smart meter can help compare total household use before and after changes, although other appliances make that comparison less precise. Fixed smart switches should not be tested by removing them or connecting test equipment yourself; an electrician can take measurements safely at the circuit.

If you are choosing between smart bulbs and smart switches, the electricity difference is only one part of the decision. Smart bulbs offer colour changes and individual lamp control, but the circuit needs to remain powered. Smart switches preserve ordinary wall-switch operation and can control standard lamps, but the wiring and switch-box depth need checking.

For a larger installation, we would look at the lamps, control modules, sensors and any hub rather than treating the system as one device. That shows where the electricity is actually going and whether the proposed schedules suit how the rooms are occupied. In an older home, we would also check the existing wiring and switch boxes before recommending a control method.

Smart lighting can therefore reduce household lighting use when it prevents lights being left on or dims them at the right time. It can also add a small background load and use more electricity if automation is poorly set up. The sensible comparison is the complete system’s measured consumption against the lighting habits it replaces.

When you compare two systems, count every part that stays powered rather than judging consumption by the number of lights. A few permanently powered modules can matter more than several battery sensors.
