Can I reserve a public EV charging station before travelling?
Sometimes, but only when the charge-point operator offers bookings through its app or website. Check the station’s live listing before travelling, and allow for the possibility that a booking window, fee or time limit applies; many public chargers work on a first-come, first-served basis.
A reservation can make a public charging stop more predictable, but it does not remove the need to check the charger and plan a backup. The booking normally applies to a specific bay and connector for a limited arrival window, not to every charger at the location.
Before you set off, check the network’s booking conditions carefully. Look for:
- the time at which your reservation starts and ends;
- whether the bay is held for you from the start of the booking or only after you arrive;
- how long you have to plug in before the reservation expires;
- whether a booking charge, cancellation charge or overstay charge applies; and
- what happens if another vehicle is still using the bay.
Some networks give only a short grace period. Traffic, queues, road closures and difficulty finding the entrance can all make you late, so avoid booking a slot that leaves no margin in your journey. If the reservation expires, another driver may be allowed to use the bay.
Check the live status shortly before departure and again as you approach. An app may show that a charger is available while the bay is blocked, the connector is damaged or the site is difficult to access. A reservation does not always mean the equipment has passed its latest status check.
Make sure the booked connector suits your car. Public sites may offer different plug types and charging speeds, while your vehicle may accept only one of them for rapid charging. The charger’s advertised power is not necessarily the power your car will receive. The car, battery temperature, state of charge and site capacity can all affect charging speed.
Plan a second charging option before leaving. Choose another station along the route or near your destination, and check that it accepts your car and payment method. This matters particularly on rural routes, where the next suitable charger may be some distance away. Keep enough charge to reach that alternative rather than arriving at the reserved bay with no practical fallback.
Some apps let you reserve chargers operated by another network through roaming access. In that case, check which company controls the bay and which company handles the booking. The displayed price, cancellation rules and support arrangements may differ from those on the operator’s own app.
At the site, follow the instructions in the app rather than assuming the reservation starts when you park. You may need to identify the correct bay, scan a code, start the session in the app or use the same account used for the booking. Take a note of the bay number and report a blocked or faulty charger through the stated support route.
When a reservation is not available, you can still reduce the risk of a wasted journey by checking live availability, selecting a site with several compatible bays and allowing time for a short wait. A busy location with one suitable charger is less dependable than a site with several alternatives, even if both appear available in the app.

A reservation is most useful when the charger matches the time you plan to spend there. A rapid-charging hub may suit a short motorway stop, while a destination charger may be more practical when you’ll leave the car parked for longer.
Check the site’s parking terms as well as the charging terms. Some locations allow charging only while you’re actively using the bay, so reserving a connector does not necessarily give you permission to leave the car there after charging finishes. Choosing a station that fits both your charging time and parking plans makes the booking more useful.
