There is no responsible flat-rate price for a consumer unit upgrade. The cost depends mainly on the condition of the installation, the number of circuits, the protection each circuit needs and whether the existing earthing and bonding meet current requirements. The consumer unit itself is only one part of the cost. A complete quotation may include the board, circuit protection, surge protection where required, labour, testing and certification. We normally assess the following before we price the work:

The correct design depends on the installation rather than on choosing the most expensive board.

Surge protection may also be appropriate. It helps protect electrical equipment from certain transient overvoltages, including those associated with events on the supply network or nearby lightning activity.   • an Electrical Installation Certificate and the required building regulations notification.

Decorating, plaster repairs, concealed cable replacement and work on inaccessible wiring may sit outside a basic replacement quotation. We identify those possibilities before work starts wherever the inspection allows, rather than treating them as unexpected additions.
