The cost of gas leak detection depends mainly on the engineer’s visit, the tests required and how easy it is to reach the suspected leak. Your first cost is usually the engineer’s assessment. This covers the visit, a visual check of the gas installation and the tests needed to establish whether gas is escaping. We look at accessible pipework, appliance connections, isolation valves and other likely leak points rather than relying on smell alone.
The final price can change when:
- the suspected leak is behind units, beneath floors or inside walls;
- several appliances or sections of pipework need testing;
- pipework is difficult to reach in a loft, crawl space or older property;
- the engineer needs more time to trace the source;
- a safe repair requires replacement parts or changes to the installation;
- other faults are found during the investigation.
An accessible connection may only need a focused test. A concealed leak takes longer because we must narrow down the affected section without disturbing more of the property than necessary. If access panels, flooring or boxing-in need to be removed, we explain that before proceeding. Making good decorative finishes is not normally part of gas repair work, so ask what reinstatement is included.
There is also a difference between finding a leak and repairing it. We may tighten or replace a straightforward connection where that is safe and appropriate. A damaged appliance connection, corroded pipe or inaccessible section may need a separate quotation. You should receive the repair cost before non-essential work begins.
A smell of gas should not be treated as a price comparison exercise. The written outcome should make clear what was tested, whether gas was detected, where the suspected fault lies and what work is recommended. If the installation is unsafe, the engineer will explain what must remain isolated and what needs repairing before it can be used again. That gives you a clear cost for the investigation and a separate decision about any remedial work.
If testing finds no escaping gas, the inspection still has a cost. The engineer has spent time checking the installation and ruling out the suspected leak. You should receive a clear explanation of what was tested and what to do next.
Ask whether the quoted inspection includes the written findings and any safety recommendations. That makes it easier to compare prices fairly, especially when one figure covers testing while another covers only the engineer’s visit.
