Can an industrial electrician provide complete testing and compliance records?

Yes. We test industrial electrical installations and provide clear compliance records, including the test results, defects identified and certificates or reports needed for audits and ongoing maintenance.

A useful compliance record must show what we tested, how we tested it, what we found and what happened next. A certificate without circuit details or test results gives an auditor very little to work with.

We begin by confirming the installation included in the inspection. That may cover distribution boards, submain cables, fixed wiring, socket outlets, isolators and the electrical connections serving production areas, offices or ancillary buildings. The agreed scope matters because a report cannot confirm the condition of equipment or circuits that we were not asked, or were not able, to inspect.

Before testing starts, we review available drawings, previous certificates, schedules and known defects. Missing or outdated records are noted rather than treated as proof that the installation is compliant. We also identify areas that need isolation, access equipment or a planned shutdown, so testing does not create an avoidable risk to people or operations.

Depending on the installation and the purpose of the visit, the inspection and testing may include:

  • visual checks of enclosures, cables, accessories, labels, barriers and signs of overheating or damage;
  • continuity testing of protective conductors and bonding;
  • insulation resistance testing where the circuit and connected equipment allow it;
  • polarity checks and earth fault loop impedance measurements;
  • testing of residual current devices where they are installed;
  • verification that protective devices, isolation points and circuit identification are suitable for the installation; and
  • functional checks of relevant electrical systems after testing is complete.

We record the results against the relevant circuit, board or location. That makes it possible to trace a reading back to the part of the installation concerned, rather than leaving a collection of unconnected figures. If a test cannot be completed because equipment cannot be disconnected or a circuit cannot be isolated, the report explains the limitation and its significance.

For a periodic inspection, the main document is usually an Electrical Installation Condition Report, supported by schedules of inspections and test results. New installations and alterations normally require an Electrical Installation Certificate, while limited additions may be covered by a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate. We select the document that matches the work carried out instead of using a generic certificate for every situation.

Defects are described in practical terms and given the appropriate classification. The record can show the location, the observed condition, the risk it presents and the action needed. A recommendation for improvement is kept distinct from a defect requiring attention, so the site team can separate essential remedial work from longer-term upgrades.

Where the inspection identifies a serious fault, the report does not turn that finding into a pass by leaving it vague. We explain what needs to be made safe and record any agreed remedial work separately. Once repairs are complete, we carry out the relevant tests again and provide the results that demonstrate what has changed. The original finding remains part of the history, while the follow-up record shows how it was addressed.

NICEIC and ECA electrical work practices support clear inspection and certification records for the fixed installation. More importantly, the paperwork gives the responsible person evidence for maintenance planning, internal reviews, insurer enquiries and external audits. The Electricity at Work Regulations require electrical systems to be maintained so far as is reasonably practicable; keeping records helps demonstrate how that maintenance is being managed, but a certificate alone does not make an unsafe installation compliant.

A complete handover pack can therefore include:

  • the appropriate installation or condition report;
  • inspection schedules and measured test results;
  • marked-up circuit or board information where the existing identification needs correction;
  • a defect and recommendation schedule;
  • records of remedial work completed;
  • retest results following repairs; and
  • any limitations, exclusions or access restrictions that affected the inspection.

Keeping those documents with the site’s maintenance records gives the next inspection a reliable starting point. It also helps a facilities manager see which issues remain open, which circuits have been altered and where further investigation may be justified. When the installation changes, we update the relevant certification rather than relying on an old report that no longer describes the site.

The result is a traceable record of the installation at the time of inspection, with defects and remedial decisions clearly separated. That is the information a responsible person needs to plan work and demonstrate that electrical safety is being actively managed.

Industrial sites often contain more than the fixed wiring. A complete electrical record should make clear whether machinery, control panels, portable appliances, emergency lighting or fire alarm systems were included in the inspection.
