How disruptive is a consumer unit upgrade?
A consumer unit upgrade is usually less disruptive than a full rewire: we need clear access to the existing board and must switch off the electricity while we work. We remove the old unit, connect and test each circuit, then leave the area tidy with your power restored.
A consumer unit upgrade is normally a contained electrical job, not a whole-house building project. The main disruption is the loss of power during the changeover, plus limited access around the existing fuse box. Most rooms remain usable, and the work does not normally involve lifting floors or opening walls.
Before the installation, we look at the position of the existing unit, the cable routes and the condition of the incoming supply. This shows whether the replacement can stay in the same location or whether the surrounding area needs minor preparation. We also identify the circuits, so lighting, sockets, heating controls and fixed appliances can be reconnected correctly.
On the day, the immediate work area needs to remain clear. If the fuse box is in a cupboard, under the stairs or near stored items, clearing that space gives us safe access and prevents belongings from getting in the way. We may need to use a drill or hand tools to secure the new unit, so there can be some short-lived noise and dust near the installation point.
Your electricity will be unavailable while we isolate the supply and carry out the changeover. That can affect lighting, Wi-Fi equipment, heating controls, alarms, fridges, freezers and other appliances. We explain what needs switching off beforehand. Sensitive equipment should be shut down properly rather than left running when the power is isolated.
Older homes can need more investigation. Cables may enter from several directions, labels may no longer match the circuits, or the existing wiring may not meet current requirements. Earthing and bonding may also need attention. We test the installation rather than assuming that the old labels or protective devices are reliable.
If testing finds a separate fault, we explain it before carrying out additional work. That might involve replacing a damaged cable, improving the connection to earth or correcting a circuit that has been altered over time. A consumer unit upgrade does not automatically mean rewiring the house, and we do not treat unrelated remedial work as part of the original job without discussing it with you.
The finished unit needs space for safe operation and future inspection. If the old position is blocked, damp or too close to stored materials, moving the unit may be safer than replacing it in exactly the same place. After installation, we test the protective devices and each circuit, then label the unit clearly. We provide the electrical test paperwork needed to show what has been checked. To keep the inconvenience manageable, plan for a period without electricity and move essential work or appointments away from the installation area. Once the testing is complete, we restore the circuits, check that key equipment is operating and leave the area tidy. If the existing wiring needs attention beyond the consumer unit, you will know what it involves before deciding how to proceed.
The main disruption is temporary loss of power, so tell us about anything that cannot simply be switched off. This might include electrically powered medical equipment, a stairlift, an aquarium or essential security equipment. We can identify what depends on the supply and agree safe shutdown and restart steps before the installation date.
If the consumer unit is in a shared entrance, utility room or another regularly used area, plan for that space to be unavailable while we work. The rest of the home can usually continue as normal, provided nobody needs to pass through the work area.
