How disruptive is home lighting installation?

Home lighting installation is usually a tidy, limited job when the existing wiring is suitable, but new circuits or rewiring can involve more access to walls, ceilings and floorboards. We explain the work needed beforehand, protect the working area and leave it clean when the fitting is complete.

For a straightforward light fitting replacement, disruption is usually limited to isolating the circuit, removing the old fitting and connecting the new one. A larger installation can involve lifting floorboards, opening sections of plaster or creating access holes before we can conceal new cables.

The main question is how easily we can reach the wiring. Loft access can let us route cables above a ceiling with little visible disturbance. A solid ceiling, tiled wall or finished floor gives us fewer routes, so we may need to lift boards, chase plaster or use a carefully positioned access point. We explain the likely method before work starts.

Room layout also affects the work. If furniture sits beneath the fitting or along a cable route, clearing that area gives us safe access and helps protect belongings. We use dust sheets and keep tools and materials together rather than spreading them through the house.

A new light in an existing position is normally more contained than adding several fittings or moving a switch. We still inspect the cable, connections, earthing and circuit protection before using it. If the existing wiring is unsuitable, we explain what needs changing and why, rather than connecting new equipment to an unsafe circuit.

Adding lights in several rooms may require new cable runs from the consumer unit or an existing circuit. This can mean temporary loss of power while we isolate and test the circuit, followed by work in the ceiling, walls or floor above. We plan the sequence so the affected areas are clear and the installation can be tested as each section is completed.

Older homes can need more care. Solid walls, lath and plaster, unusual ceiling construction and previous alterations can hide cable routes or make them difficult to access. We check what is already there before deciding whether cables can be concealed, surface-mounted neatly or routed through another part of the building.

External lighting has different practical considerations. We need to protect cable entries from water, position fittings securely and confirm that the circuit has suitable protection. That may add work around the outside wall, but it avoids leaving an exposed connection or poorly sealed hole.

Before we start, we discuss:

  • which rooms will be affected;
  • where we need access to ceilings, walls, floors or the consumer unit;
  • whether furniture or fragile items need moving;
  • how we will make good any access points; and
  • when the room can be used normally again.

We test the completed installation, check that switches and controls operate as intended, and remove the waste from the work. Our NICEIC- and ECA-registered electricians work tidily, with the aim of leaving the room ready for normal use rather than leaving unfinished cable routes or loose fittings behind.

The least visible cable route isn’t always the least disruptive. Concealing a cable may involve chasing plaster and decorating afterwards, while a neatly positioned surface route can avoid opening the wall. We explain the difference before you choose.
