Will an electrician need to cut into walls to find a fault?

Usually not. We trace the fault using testing and inspection first, then make only the access needed where a concealed cable or connection cannot be reached safely.

Electrical fault finding starts with testing, not removing plaster. We identify which circuit is affected, isolate it safely and narrow the search using the consumer unit, accessories and accessible cable routes.

The first step is to understand what happened. A tripping circuit breaker, burning smell, flickering lights, dead sockets and intermittent power each point towards different parts of the installation. We’ll ask which equipment was running, whether the fault affects one room or several, and whether anything has recently been changed or damaged.

We then work through the circuit in a controlled order. This can include:

  • checking the consumer unit and identifying the affected circuit;
  • testing the circuit for insulation resistance, continuity and unwanted connections;
  • examining sockets, switches, light fittings and other accessible accessories;
  • checking junctions, connections and cable routes in accessible lofts, cupboards and floor voids; and
  • isolating sections of the circuit to establish where the fault begins and ends.

These tests often show whether the problem is a failed accessory, a loose connection, a damaged cable or an appliance connected to the circuit. Finding the cause matters because resetting the breaker may restore power without removing the danger.

We usually gain access by removing a socket, switch or light fitting, rather than opening the wall around it. Floorboards, loft boards and removable panels may also provide a route to the wiring. We’ll use the least disruptive access that still gives us reliable evidence.

A wall may need a small opening when testing confirms that the fault lies in a concealed cable or inaccessible joint. This can happen after a screw or nail has penetrated a cable, when a cable has been damaged by damp or vermin, or where an old connection is buried behind plaster. We don’t cut into a wall simply to search at random.

The type of wall affects the method. Plasterboard can often be opened in a controlled area and inspected around the cable route. Solid masonry, tiled walls and older plaster require more care, particularly where finishes are difficult to match or the building has historic features. In a listed or character property, we’ll discuss the access needed before making any opening.

Older installations can make tracing more involved. Cable routes may not follow modern expectations, drawings may be missing, and previous alterations may have left concealed junctions or redundant wiring. We follow the test results instead of assuming that the visible layout shows the whole circuit.

If the fault is intermittent, we may need to reproduce the conditions safely or test sections separately. A circuit that works when we arrive can still have a loose connection or insulation fault. We record what the tests show so that any repair addresses the cause rather than just the symptom.

Before any intrusive access, we’ll explain why it is needed and what we expect to inspect. Once the fault is located, we can advise whether the repair involves replacing an accessory, repairing a cable, removing an unsafe section or carrying out wider remedial work. We won’t recommend a full rewire unless the condition and layout of the installation justify it.

Where a fault leaves part of the installation unsafe, we’ll explain what must remain isolated and what can continue to be used. Electrical work is carried out by our NICEIC-registered electricians, with testing appropriate to the repair and the condition of the circuit.

The visible symptom does not always mark the fault. A dead socket may be the last point on a circuit, while the damaged connection sits earlier in the cable route. Opening the wall beside that socket could create unnecessary damage.

We use the circuit layout and test results to choose the most useful access point. That may be a different socket, a floorboard or a removable panel. This helps us inspect the likely section rather than cut into several areas while searching.
