How much maintenance do smart home automation systems need?

Smart home automation usually needs light ongoing maintenance: keep software updated, replace device batteries and check that routines still work as intended. The important tasks are keeping the system secure, confirming that automations still match your routine, checking the physical condition of devices and reviewing what happens when a connection or component fails.

Maintenance depends on how the system is built. A few wireless lights and sensors need less attention than a system controlling heating, access, ventilation or electrical loads. More connected devices also mean more opportunities for a setting, account permission or integration to change.

Review automations after changes at home. A new router, replacement heating control or altered daily routine can make an old rule unsuitable. A heating schedule might start the system when the house is empty, while a presence rule could switch lighting off while somebody is still using a room. For a straightforward system, maintenance is mainly a matter of sensible reviews rather than regular engineering work.
