What if my property cannot support a 3-phase EV charger?
If your property cannot support a 3-phase EV charger, a single-phase charger may still provide suitable home charging. We assess the incoming supply, available capacity and charging needs, then explain whether load management or an electrical upgrade is necessary.
If the property cannot support a 3-phase EV charger, you may still be able to charge at home. The usual alternatives are a suitable single-phase charger, a charger with dynamic load management, or an upgrade to the property’s electrical supply.
A three-phase vehicle does not normally need a three-phase home supply. It can charge from a single-phase charger, although the charging rate will be limited by the available single-phase capacity. For many households, that is sufficient for their daily driving and avoids changing the incoming supply.
Where a single-phase charger is suitable, we select equipment that matches the vehicle, the property’s supply and the way you intend to charge. The installation still needs its own properly designed circuit, protective devices and a safe cable route to the parking space. A detached garage, outbuilding or long driveway may affect the cable size and installation method.
Load management can help when the charger would otherwise compete with the rest of the property. The system monitors demand from appliances such as ovens, immersion heaters, heat pumps and electric heating. It reduces or pauses the charging load when the property’s demand rises, then increases it again when capacity becomes available.
This approach does not create extra electrical capacity. It manages the capacity that already exists, so charging may take longer when several high-demand appliances run together. We explain that trade-off before you choose the charger.
An electrical supply upgrade may be appropriate when you need three-phase charging, want a higher charging rate, or expect several large electrical loads in the future. The work might involve changes to the consumer unit, meter position, service cable or incoming supply. Some parts may require approval or work by the distribution network operator (DNO), rather than by the charger installer alone.
A DNO assessment does not automatically mean that an upgrade will be approved or that the work will be straightforward. The network capacity, service arrangement and supply to the property all affect the outcome. We identify which work sits within the property’s installation and which part needs to be referred to the network operator.
A battery or solar installation does not, by itself, turn a single-phase grid connection into a three-phase supply. If you are considering solar panels, battery storage and EV charging together, we look at how the systems will interact and whether the proposed charging arrangement remains within the property’s limits.
Older homes can need more investigation before a charger is specified. We check the incoming supply, meter and tails, consumer unit, earthing arrangement, existing circuits and the route to the parking space. We also consider equipment that may be added later, such as electric heating or a second charger.

We do not specify a three-phase charger simply because it offers a higher theoretical charging rate. The vehicle’s onboard charger, the home’s electrical capacity, the parking arrangement and your charging pattern all matter. A lower-rated installation can be the more practical choice if it meets your regular needs.

A three-phase charger only increases charging speed when the vehicle can accept three-phase AC power. If its onboard charger is limited to single-phase input, changing the property supply would not provide the expected benefit.
