What does our business need to prepare for EV charger installation?
Before we install commercial EV chargers, we need details of the parking layout, charger locations, cable routes and existing electrical supply. We assess these during the survey and identify any electrical upgrades, access arrangements or permissions needed before work starts.
The most useful preparation is to gather the site information we need and make the electrical installation accessible. That lets us confirm the installation plan, identify any work needed before fitting the chargers and provide a clear quotation.
Have the existing electrical information ready. If you have recent electrical test reports, distribution-board schedules, site plans or records of previous alterations, please make them available. These documents can show how the installation has been arranged and highlight any known restrictions before we inspect it.
It also helps to identify the meter room, main consumer unit, distribution boards and any plant rooms that may need inspection. On larger premises, tell us about restricted areas, security procedures and induction requirements before the survey. We can then plan access without interrupting more of the site than necessary.
Decide how the charging area should work day to day. Consider which parking bays should be equipped first, how vehicles will be positioned and whether the bays need signs, markings or protection from accidental impact. If the installation may grow later, tell us at the outset. We can consider the space and electrical arrangement with future expansion in mind.
Think about how staff, visitors, tenants or fleet drivers will use the chargers. You may need a simple process for reporting faults, moving vehicles when charging has finished or recording electricity use. Prepare the working area for installation. Keep access clear around the proposed charger positions, electrical equipment and cable routes on the agreed installation date. Remove stored items where possible and tell us about fragile surfaces, restricted ceiling voids, underground services or areas that cannot be disturbed. If drilling, trenching or short electrical shutdowns could affect staff, customers or tenants, arrange suitable communication in advance.
For a business that remains occupied during the work, nominate someone who can approve practical decisions on site. That person can confirm access, answer questions about the building and help us agree safe working areas. We will explain any isolation needed before it takes place.
Allow for checks before the charger is connected. An older installation may need remedial electrical work, clearer circuit identification or an upgrade to protective equipment.
