What type of EV charging setup suits my business?
The right commercial EV charging setup depends on who will use it, how long vehicles stay and how much electrical capacity the site has. We assess those factors before recommending chargers for a fleet, staff parking, customer use or a combination of all three.
The most suitable setup depends on vehicle use, parking time, access and the electricity available at the site. A depot fleet usually needs controlled charging for several vehicles, while staff, visitors and customers need a simpler arrangement. Many businesses need a combination, with different access rules for each group.
Fleet vehicles usually need charging at their base. If vans or cars return for several hours, dedicated AC charge points can recharge them during the time they are already parked. We look at departure times, daily mileage and the number of vehicles so the available power is shared around the fleet rather than assigned to the first vehicle plugged in.
Vehicles that return with little time before their next journey may need higher-powered charging. That can affect the incoming supply, cable routes, parking layout and installation cost. We compare the extra electrical work with the operational value of getting vehicles back on the road sooner, rather than recommending rapid charging by default.
Staff charging needs fair access. A workplace may have fewer chargers than electric vehicles, particularly as more employees change cars. Load management can share the site’s available capacity between charge points. Access controls can also separate staff use from visitor or fleet use, so the charging arrangement reflects the way the business operates.
Staff who leave their cars parked for most of the working day generally suit standard workplace charging. If shifts change throughout the day, we consider how vehicles rotate through the bays and whether the system needs reservation, user identification or charging limits. The aim is to prevent a small number of vehicles occupying the most useful spaces all day.
Customer and visitor charging is different. Drivers need to find the bays easily, understand how to start a charge and avoid obstructing ordinary parking. We consider the position of the charge points, cable reach, signage, protection from vehicle impact and how the equipment will be managed. A retail, hospitality or visitor site may benefit from charging that is available to guests, while a business serving a private customer base may need restricted access instead.
A mixed-use site normally needs separate rules for each user group. Fleet vehicles may need priority before the morning round, staff may charge during the working day and visitors may need access at specific times. We can plan the charge points, parking bays and controls around those demands instead of treating every socket as identical.
The building’s electrical capacity is a key part of the decision. An older commercial property may have limited spare capacity, long cable routes or a supply that was designed before electric vehicles were expected. We survey the distribution equipment, the distance to each bay and the proposed charging demand. If the existing supply cannot support every charger at full power, managed charging may provide a practical arrangement. A network supply upgrade or onsite battery storage may also need consideration, depending on the site and the required charging pattern.
Physical layout matters as much as the charger itself. We plan routes through yards, car parks and buildings, allowing for buried ducts, wall penetrations, protective equipment and safe positioning of cables. Where vehicles turn or reverse near the charging bays, we consider impact protection and maintenance access. These details reduce the risk of a charging installation interfering with deliveries, pedestrians or ordinary parking.
We recommend the setup after examining four things:
- how many vehicles need charging now and how that number may change;
- how long each vehicle stays parked;
- who should be allowed to use each charge point;
- what power, space and cable routes the premises can provide.

A site with only a few vehicles may start with a small number of points and suitable capacity management. A larger fleet may need dedicated bays, a more substantial distribution arrangement and staged installation work.
For a business in an older, rural or semi-rural building, the survey also identifies practical constraints that are easy to miss from a plan. Long distances between the meter, building and parking area can make excavation and cabling significant. We include those requirements in the written quotation, so the proposed setup reflects the real site rather than just the charger specification.
