Do EV charging tariffs require a smart meter?

Most smart EV tariffs require a compatible smart meter so your supplier can record half-hourly usage and schedule charging. Standard electricity tariffs do not require one, but your supplier may need to upgrade the meter before you can join a smart charging tariff.

Not always. A standard home-charging tariff can work with a traditional meter, but many EV-specific tariffs need a compatible smart meter to apply different prices throughout the day. The tariff’s terms will tell you exactly what the supplier requires.

An EV tariff usually uses half-hourly meter readings to identify when electricity was used. The supplier can then charge one rate during cheaper periods and another at busier times. Without the required readings, it may not be able to bill the tariff correctly.

Some suppliers require a particular type of smart meter, often one that can communicate reliably with their system after you switch tariff. An older smart meter may not meet those conditions, even if it already sends readings. Ask the supplier to check the meter’s compatibility before you change tariff.

A smart meter does not automatically reduce the cost of charging. The saving comes from using a suitable tariff and charging when its lower rates apply. Your charger, car or charging app may need to be set to charge during those periods. Check whether the tariff requires a specific charger, vehicle connection or app as well as the meter.

  • Standard electricity tariff: a smart meter is generally not needed. You pay the tariff’s normal unit rate, regardless of when the car charges.
  • Time-of-use tariff: a smart meter may be required so the supplier can bill different rates at different times.
  • Existing multi-rate meter: this may already record separate periods, but it does not automatically qualify for an EV tariff. The supplier must confirm that it accepts the meter.
  • Smart charging tariff: the supplier may need meter data and permission to control or schedule charging through a compatible vehicle or charger.

Properties with weak mobile coverage need an extra check. Smart meters use a communications network to send readings, and a poor signal can affect installation or tariff compatibility. The energy supplier can confirm whether it has an alternative arrangement for the property. A home with reliable internet may still have a problem if the meter itself cannot communicate with the supplier’s network.

If you are moving from a traditional meter to a smart meter, the supplier normally arranges the meter work. Ask who is responsible for the installation, whether there is any charge, which meter model will be fitted and when the EV tariff can start. Keep a meter reading on the day of the change, so you have a record if the first bill needs checking.

The meter and the charger do different jobs. The meter records electricity used and provides data for billing. The charger controls how electricity reaches the car. A charger can often be programmed to charge overnight without an EV tariff, but that does not guarantee that those hours have the cheapest electricity price.

Before switching, check these points with the supplier:

  1. Does the tariff require a smart meter, and is the meter already installed compatible?
  2. Must the meter provide half-hourly readings?
  3. Does the supplier need consent to take readings more frequently?
  4. Must you use a particular charger, vehicle connection or charging app?
  5. What happens if the smart meter loses communication?
  6. Are there extra standing charges, exit fees or conditions linked to the tariff?

So, if you want a tariff designed specifically for EV charging, expect to need a compatible smart meter. If you are happy with a standard or existing multi-rate tariff, you may not need one at all.

Solar panels or a home battery can change the tariff decision. The cheapest period for charging the car may not be the best time to use stored electricity or export solar power. Check how the tariff treats imported energy, exported energy and battery charging before you switch.
