Yes, an initial estimate can change after the survey, but the survey should make the final cost clearer rather than less certain. We use it to confirm the charger location, cable route, electrical capacity and the work needed to install everything safely.
A price based on photographs or a telephone discussion may assume a straightforward route from the existing electrical equipment to the parking space. The property may differ from that assumption. A detached garage, thick masonry, a long drive, an outbuilding or restricted access can all affect the labour, cable length and protective materials required.
The charger location matters. A unit beside the consumer unit usually needs less cable and fewer fixings than one at the far side of the house. If the cable must pass outside, we consider how it will be protected from damage, where it will cross paths and whether it needs additional containment. We also check whether drilling through the wall is suitable for the building and the proposed route.
The existing electrical installation can affect the scope. We check the incoming supply, earthing arrangement, consumer unit and available capacity. We also look at other high-load equipment, such as electric heating, immersion heaters or solar and battery systems. If the house could draw too much power when several appliances run together, we may recommend load management or another way to control demand. That can change the equipment and labour included in the quotation.
Older properties need particular care. A listed building, barn conversion or solid-wall house may have unusual construction, limited cable routes or electrical equipment that no longer meets current requirements. We explain the practical options rather than assuming that the shortest route is appropriate.
The charger specification can change the price too. The survey confirms whether the selected unit suits the supply and installation location. A different cable length, mounting arrangement, protection method or control feature may be needed once we understand how the charger will be used. If the proposed unit is not suitable, we explain why and discuss alternatives before changing the specification.
There are usually three possible outcomes:
- The survey confirms the original assumptions, so the quotation remains unchanged.
- The installation needs additional work, and we issue a revised written quotation showing the reason and cost.
- The survey identifies a safer or more practical way to complete the installation, which may alter the original price or reduce unnecessary work.
We discuss any change before work starts. You can then compare the revised scope with the original estimate and decide whether to proceed. We do not treat extra work as an unexplained addition to the bill.
The survey also prevents avoidable disruption on installation day. We can identify where access is needed, what equipment must be isolated and whether another trade or permission is involved. Once the route and specification are agreed, the written quotation records what is included, so you know what the price covers.
Our electrical work is carried out by NICEIC- and ECA-qualified teams. That means the installation is assessed against the relevant electrical requirements, with the appropriate certification provided when the work is complete.
A lower estimate isn’t useful if essential work sits outside the stated price. When the survey changes the scope, we separate the charger, cable route, protective equipment, testing and certification where relevant. The written quotation also records its assumptions and exclusions. That lets you compare the original and revised prices on the same basis, rather than choosing between two different levels of work.
