What will it cost to use an EV charging network?

Using an EV charging network can involve a per-kilowatt-hour or per-minute charge, plus possible connection, parking or subscription fees. Check the network’s current pricing before you start, as the total depends on the charger, location, charging speed and membership terms.

There is no standard price for public EV charging. The amount you pay depends on the charger’s tariff, the energy added, how long the car remains connected and the payment arrangement you use.

Most networks base the main charge on the electricity delivered, shown as a price per kilowatt-hour. A larger battery or a lower state of charge therefore usually means a higher session cost. The car may also reduce its charging rate as the battery fills, so the time connected does not always reflect the energy added.

Some operators add a connection fee or minimum session charge. Others apply an idle fee after charging finishes, particularly where the bay is intended for rapid turnover. A separate parking charge may apply at a supermarket, railway station, council car park or motorway site. Check both the charging tariff and the site’s parking terms.

Rapid and ultra-rapid chargers often cost more than slower public chargers. You are paying for higher power, shorter stops and the equipment needed to deliver that power. An AC charger may suit a longer stay, while a rapid charger may make more sense when you are travelling and need to continue your journey.

The price shown on a network’s own app may not be the price charged through a third-party app or roaming service. A roaming provider may add its own margin, transaction charge or different tariff. If you have a choice, compare the operator’s direct price with the price shown by the app you normally use.

Memberships can reduce the energy rate or remove some session charges, but they usually involve a recurring fee. Work out how many public charging sessions you expect to make before subscribing. A membership only saves money when the reduction in charging costs outweighs the subscription cost.

Payment method can affect the final amount. Networks may accept an app, contactless card, a network account or a roaming account, and these options may not carry identical terms. An app can also show live pricing, charger status and any restrictions before you start. Contactless payment is convenient, but it may not provide the same account history or member rate.

Some sites use different rates at different times or for different charger types. A tariff may also vary between locations operated by the same network. Do not assume that the price at one service station, car park or retail site applies elsewhere.

For a realistic cost comparison, check:

  • the energy price per kilowatt-hour;
  • any connection, minimum-session or payment fee;
  • the charger speed and whether the car can use it fully;
  • idle, overstay or separate parking charges;
  • the direct-network price compared with any roaming price;
  • membership fees and the rate available to members;
  • the tariff shown for that specific location and charger.

Record the amount of energy added rather than comparing session totals alone. A short stop may cost more if it includes a fixed connection charge, while a longer session may cost less per unit of energy. Home charging gives you a different basis for comparison. The cost normally follows the electricity tariff for the property, while public charging includes the network’s operating costs and site charges. A home charger may therefore be useful for regular overnight charging, with public networks reserved for longer journeys or when home charging is unavailable. The right comparison uses the tariff for your home, the public network you actually use and the journeys you make.

Prices can change, and the information on a route planner may be out of date. Check the network’s app or the payment screen immediately before charging. Save the receipt if the amount differs from the displayed tariff, particularly when a roaming service or parking operator is involved.

If you are planning regular public charging, map the networks on your usual routes and compare their direct tariffs, charger locations and payment options. That gives you a more useful estimate than relying on a single advertised rate.

The same public tariff can produce different journey costs in different cars. A vehicle that uses less electricity per mile will travel further for each kilowatt-hour than a heavier or less efficient model.

For a useful estimate, combine the network’s current price per kilowatt-hour with your car’s recent energy consumption. Apply that to the miles you expect to drive, then add any parking, connection or overstay charge shown for the site. This gives a better comparison between networks than looking at the advertised energy rate alone.
