To quote for an EV charger, we need details about your home, parking space, vehicle, electrical supply and the likely cable route. Photos of the consumer unit, parking area and proposed charger position can help us assess the installation and price the work accurately.
An accurate EV charger quote depends on the electrical capacity available, the legal position of the parking space, the vehicle’s charging requirements and the intended cable route. The more detail you can provide, the more confidently we can identify the likely installation work before a site survey.
Tell us about the property and electrical supply. We need to know whether the charger will serve a house, flat, rental property, outbuilding or commercial premises. The age and type of the property can affect the route between the meter, consumer unit and charger. A detached garage, barn or parking area away from the house may need a longer cable run or additional protection.
It also helps to tell us about any existing electrical equipment that could affect available capacity. This may include solar panels, a battery, an electric heating system, an immersion heater or another EV charger. We check the consumer unit, earthing arrangement and supply capacity during the assessment. If the existing installation cannot safely support a charger, the quote will explain what needs changing rather than hiding that work in a provisional price.
Explain where the car is parked. We need to know if the parking space is on your own driveway, in a garage, on a shared private area or at a block of flats. If you do not own the space or the wall where the charger would go, tell us who manages it. Give us the vehicle details. The make and model identify the vehicle’s connector and its maximum AC charging rate. We also need to know whether you prefer a tethered charger with a permanently attached lead or an untethered unit with a separate charging cable.
Tell us how you expect to charge. For example, you may want to charge overnight, use a solar installation, share one charger between two vehicles or keep the lead away from a public-facing path. These choices affect the charger position, cable length and whether smart charging or load management should form part of the design.
Describe the preferred charger position. A wall-mounted unit is common, but a post-mounted charger may suit a driveway where no suitable wall is nearby. We need to know whether the unit will be indoors or outdoors and whether it will be exposed to vehicles, gates or passing foot traffic. The proposed position should allow you to reach the car without creating a trip hazard or leaving the cable under unnecessary strain.
If smart functions are important to you, tell us about the internet signal at the proposed charger location. Some charging features depend on a reliable connection. If the signal is weak, we can take that into account when discussing the equipment and installation arrangement.
Send the information that affects the price. Useful details include:
- the property type and whether you own or rent it;
- the location of the meter and consumer unit;
- the distance and construction between the consumer unit and proposed charger position;
- the vehicle make, model and whether it is fully electric or a plug-in hybrid;
- whether you want a tethered or untethered charger;
- any solar panels, battery storage or other high-load electrical equipment;
- whether the charger will be shared between vehicles;
- any permissions needed for a shared drive, flat, rental property or outbuilding; and
- any preference for overnight, solar-led or managed charging.
A remote estimate can often identify the likely installation arrangement when these details are clear. Where the supply, earthing, cable route or parking rights are uncertain, we may need to inspect the property before confirming the price. That prevents a basic installation price from being presented when consumer unit work, extra cable protection or permission-related changes may be needed.
Before work starts, we provide a written quotation setting out the proposed charger position, cable route, electrical work and any exclusions. If the survey finds an issue that changes the design, we explain it before carrying out additional work. You can then compare the practical arrangement as well as the price.
The charger is only one part of the installation cost. A clear quote should identify the unit, cable, protective equipment, mounting arrangement and electrical work separately. It should also state whether making good is included after drilling or cable installation. This lets you compare the full installation rather than comparing charger prices alone.
