How long does a portable EV charger take to charge an electric car?

A portable EV charger usually takes several hours to add a useful amount of range, while a full charge can take much longer than with a dedicated home charge point. The time depends on the charger’s output, the car’s battery capacity and how much charge the battery needs.

The most useful way to estimate portable EV charging time is to calculate the energy needed for the next journey, rather than waiting for a completely full battery. A small top-up may take a few hours, while replacing most of the battery can take much of a day or longer.

Charging time depends on four main things:

  • the portable charger’s maximum output;
  • the amount of energy the car needs;
  • the car’s onboard AC charging limit; and
  • the condition of the battery and the supply socket.

The basic calculation is:

Energy needed ÷ charging power = approximate charging time.

That calculation gives an estimate rather than an exact finish time. Charging losses mean that not all the electricity drawn from the socket reaches the battery. The car can also reduce the charging rate as the battery approaches full, so the final part usually takes longer than the earlier part.

Battery size affects the time more than the car’s driving range alone. A larger battery needs more energy to reach the same state of charge. The dashboard’s battery percentage tells you how much charge remains, while the vehicle handbook or manufacturer’s app may show the battery’s usable capacity. Those details give a better estimate than the advertised maximum range.

The charger’s output sets the ceiling. A portable unit can only supply the power for which it is designed. The car may also have a lower AC charging limit, in which case the lower figure controls the session. Changing the cable or using a higher-rated socket will not make the car accept more power than its onboard charger allows.

Temperature changes the result. A cold battery may charge more slowly until it reaches a suitable operating temperature. Very high or very low battery levels can also reduce the rate. If the car has battery pre-conditioning, using it before charging can help, although it uses energy and needs to be set up through the vehicle’s controls.

A portable charger is most practical when the car can remain connected for several hours. Many drivers plug in after arriving home and use the energy added before the next journey. If you need a large amount of range in a short stop, a portable unit may not be the right charging method. A dedicated home charge point normally provides more power, but that is a separate installation and assessment.

Before relying on a portable charger, check the vehicle handbook for its permitted charging method and the portable unit’s instructions for its selectable current. The socket must be suitable, in good condition and on a circuit that can carry the load without overheating. Avoid treating an ordinary indoor socket as a permanent high-load connection without having the circuit checked.

When estimating a session, start with the battery percentage you have now and the percentage you need for the journey. Allow extra charge for weather, traffic, payload and the return trip if there is no convenient place to plug in. The car’s own charging display should then refine the estimate once charging begins.
