What guarantees cover the boiler and installation?

The boiler manufacturer’s guarantee usually covers faults with the boiler itself, while a separate workmanship guarantee covers installation-related problems. Check what parts, labour, exclusions, registration requirements and guarantee length apply before work begins.

The paperwork for a new boiler usually contains several separate protections. The manufacturer covers defects in the boiler, while the installer is responsible for faults caused by poor fitting or connected work. The terms should also explain what happens to controls, pumps, valves, flues and other parts fitted at the same time.

The boiler guarantee

A manufacturer’s guarantee normally applies to the boiler’s internal components. It may cover a failed heat exchanger, fan, sensor or circuit board if the fault results from a manufacturing defect. It usually doesn’t cover damage caused by incorrect use, poor water quality, frost, lack of maintenance or changes made by someone else.

The guarantee may depend on the boiler being installed by a suitably qualified person and registered with the manufacturer. Some manufacturers also require the boiler to be serviced at the stated intervals. Missing those requirements can affect a later claim, so we explain what needs to be kept and when it needs to be done.

Gas boiler work must be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer. If the boiler is oil-fired, OFTEC registration covers the engineer’s work on that oil system. Those requirements are separate from the manufacturer’s own guarantee conditions.

The installation guarantee

The installation guarantee relates to the work carried out at the property. It can apply if a pipe joint leaks, a flue has been fitted incorrectly, a condensate pipe has been routed badly or the heating system has not been connected as specified. It is different from a boiler parts guarantee because the problem comes from the installation rather than a defective appliance.

Installation terms should identify what the installer accepts responsibility for. That may include the boiler connection, flue, condensate route, controls, radiators, valves, pumps and alterations to the heating pipework. A fault in an older part of the system may fall outside the installation guarantee if that part wasn’t replaced or altered during the work.

For example, a failed radiator valve installed as part of the replacement may be treated differently from an old valve elsewhere in the system. A leak from an existing pipe that wasn’t disturbed may also be handled differently from a leak at a new joint. The written scope of work helps separate these situations.

Parts, labour and call-out costs

Check whether the cover includes both the replacement part and the labour needed to diagnose and fit it. A parts-only guarantee can still leave you paying for an engineer’s visit or installation time. Some terms also exclude related work, such as draining and refilling the system, replacing damaged pipework or correcting a fault outside the boiler.

We set out the planned work in a written quotation before it starts. That gives you a record of which boiler, controls and connected components are included, rather than leaving the scope to an assumption made during a later claim.

Controls and connected equipment

A new heating system may include a programmer, room thermostat, motorised valve, pump or cylinder controls. These items may have their own manufacturer terms rather than sharing the boiler’s cover. Ask for each item to be identified, especially if a control system is supplied separately from the boiler.

The same applies to radiators and pipework. A guarantee for the boiler doesn’t automatically cover every part of the central heating system. If we recommend changes to radiator sizing, pipework or system controls, we explain what those changes are intended to achieve and what is included in the installation.

What can invalidate cover?

  • Failing to register the boiler within the required period.
  • Using an installer who doesn’t meet the manufacturer’s qualification requirements.
  • Not completing servicing required by the guarantee terms.
  • Allowing sludge, scale, freezing or poor water quality to damage the system.
  • Changing the flue, controls or boiler after installation without approval.
  • Using the system outside the manufacturer’s instructions.

These exclusions don’t mean every fault will be rejected. The cause still needs to be established. We inspect the symptoms, check the installation and explain whether the problem appears to concern the boiler, the installation or another part of the heating system.

Who deals with a problem?

Start with the party responsible for the relevant cover. We can investigate installation faults and explain the next step. A suspected manufacturing defect may need to be referred to the boiler manufacturer, particularly where a replacement part or technical authorisation is required.

Keep the quotation, guarantee certificate, commissioning record, service records and any manufacturer registration confirmation together. A clear fault description, photographs of a leak or error code, and the date the problem began can also make diagnosis easier.

A guarantee is separate from your legal rights under the contract. It shouldn’t remove the installer’s responsibility for work that was not carried out with reasonable care and skill. Before accepting a quotation, ask for the guarantee terms in writing and check who to contact, what is covered, what is excluded and whether labour is included.

If the property changes hands, don’t assume the boiler guarantee transfers automatically. Some manufacturers require the new owner to register the boiler, while others set a time limit or keep the cover with the original customer.

Check the transfer conditions before you sell or buy. Keep the installation paperwork, commissioning record and service history together, so the next owner can show that the boiler was installed and maintained in line with the guarantee terms.

Ask us to explain your boiler and installation guarantee

If you’re comparing boiler quotations, ask us to talk through the guarantee terms and what happens if a fault develops. We’ll explain who handles each type of claim before you make your decision.
