How much does a heat pump installation cost?

Heat pump installation cost varies with the heat demand of your home, the system size, radiator and pipework changes, electrical work and installation access. We assess those requirements at survey stage, explain any available grant support, and provide a written quotation before work starts.

There is no sensible single price for a heat pump installation. The amount depends on the design of the system, the condition of the property and how much of the existing heating system can remain. A grant may reduce the amount you pay, but it will not necessarily cover every part of the work.

The main costs are usually:

  • the air source heat pump and its controls;
  • the hot water cylinder, if the existing cylinder is unsuitable;
  • radiators that cannot deliver enough heat at the lower operating temperature;
  • pipework changes where existing pipes restrict flow or are undersized;
  • the electrical supply, consumer unit or protection needed for the new system;
  • the outdoor unit base, condensate drainage and connection between the outdoor and indoor equipment;
  • removal or isolation of the old boiler and associated equipment;
  • system filling, controls, commissioning and handover.

Two houses with the same number of bedrooms can therefore have very different installation costs. A newer home with suitable radiators and pipework may need less alteration. An older property may need larger emitters, improved insulation in specific areas or changes to the electrical installation before the heat pump can run properly.

Your current fuel matters to the design, but it does not determine the price on its own. Oil and LPG systems are common in rural homes, and replacing them can involve removing tanks, boilers and flues. We check what can safely remain and what needs to be removed, rather than adding unnecessary work to the quotation.

What we check before pricing the work

The heat loss of each room is more useful than a rough price based only on floor area. We look at the construction of the property, insulation, glazing, room use and exposure. We then compare the calculated heat loss with the output from the proposed system and the existing radiators.

That matters particularly in solid-wall houses, barn conversions and listed buildings. These homes can work well with a heat pump, but the design may need to account for higher heat loss, limited options for insulation or restrictions on external equipment. We explain where an improvement would affect the cost and where it would not offer enough benefit to justify the disruption.

We also inspect the proposed outdoor-unit position, the route for pipework and condensate drainage, the hot water arrangement and the available electrical supply. These details can add work that is easy to miss in a basic estimate.

How grant support affects the price

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme has eligibility rules and its terms can change. We check whether the property and proposed system meet the current requirements before treating grant support as part of the financial plan. Our MCS certification allows us to make an eligible application on your behalf.

A grant does not remove the need to price the complete installation. Items such as radiator changes, electrical alterations, building work and removal of old equipment may sit outside the grant’s eligible scope. The quotation separates these elements, so you can see the installation cost before any support is deducted.

It is worth checking the timing as well as the eligibility. Grant approval, application evidence and commissioning paperwork all need to be handled correctly. We explain which documents are needed and what the grant decision means for the amount remaining to pay.

Why a cheaper quotation may not be comparable

A lower figure can reflect a smaller heat pump, fewer radiator changes or no allowance for electrical work. It may also exclude the cylinder, removal of the old system, controls or commissioning. Those omissions can become additional costs once the work has started.

When comparing quotations, check that each one states the heat-loss method, heat pump output, cylinder capacity, radiator assumptions, electrical requirements and commissioning arrangements. The proposed flow temperature is important too. A system designed around unsuitable assumptions may cost less to install but use more electricity or struggle to heat some rooms.

Installation cost and running cost are linked

The lowest installation cost is not always the lowest cost over the system’s working life. A heat pump performs more efficiently when the house retains heat and the radiators can warm the rooms at a suitable flow temperature. Poor insulation, restricted pipework or incorrect controls can affect electricity use.

We discuss the likely running pattern using the property’s size, insulation, heating habits and current fuel. Any savings or payback calculation should be based on those details, current energy prices and the final design. We do not use a headline figure that treats every home as the same.

For an off-gas-grid property, the comparison may include oil or LPG deliveries as well as electricity. For a home with existing solar panels or planned battery storage, we can also discuss how the heating demand fits with the wider energy system. That is part of assessing the financial case, not a reason to add equipment that the property does not need.

The reliable way to establish the cost is a property assessment followed by a detailed design and written quotation. You can then see which work is essential, what grant support may apply and what decisions remain yours before committing to the installation.

Recommendations for insulation or building improvements are not automatically the same as heat pump installation costs. We separate work needed for the system to operate correctly from improvements that could be planned later.

That distinction helps you understand which costs are essential before installation and which are longer-term choices. It also prevents a general recommendation from being treated as an unexplained addition to the quotation.
