What qualifications should a renewable energy installer have?
For solar, battery or heat pump work, look for MCS certification and the appropriate electrical or heating registration. The installer should also have relevant equipment training and the practical experience to survey your property, design the system and complete the required certification.
The right installer needs more than a general renewable energy certificate. Look for current qualifications covering the electrical work, heating system design, equipment being installed and the legal paperwork your project requires.
Electrical qualifications are essential for solar and batteries. Your installation may involve roof-mounted generation, DC cabling, an inverter, battery storage, protection devices and changes to the consumer unit. The installer must understand how these parts work together safely. They should be able to test the finished system and provide the electrical certificates required for the work.
Ask whether the person designing the system also understands export limitation, battery isolation, fault protection and connection to the existing supply. A solar installer who only fits panels may not have the skills needed for a battery installation or a consumer unit upgrade.
Heat pump work needs heating design knowledge as well as electrical competence. The installer should calculate the heat loss from each room, check the existing pipework and assess whether the radiators can deliver enough heat at lower flow temperatures. That information determines the heat pump size, cylinder arrangement, controls and any changes needed inside the property.
In an older house, the survey should account for solid walls, extensions, high ceilings, draughts and rooms that have been altered over time. An installer who sizes the system from floor area alone may miss important details. The same applies to homes previously heated by oil or LPG, where the existing boiler and radiators may have been designed for higher temperatures.
Look for training on the equipment being proposed. Each manufacturer’s controls, inverters, batteries and heat pump settings work differently. Current product training helps the installer commission the system correctly, explain the controls and deal with faults without guessing. Ask for the exact equipment proposed and confirm that the installer is trained to install and commission it.
For systems containing refrigerant, the engineer must also hold the appropriate qualification for the work involved. This matters particularly where the design uses equipment with refrigerant connections that need to be made on site. The installer should explain whether that requirement applies to the system under consideration.
Planning and building regulations form part of competent installation. Your installer should know when a solar array, battery, external heat pump unit or associated alteration needs approval or notification. They should also consider the position of the heat pump, noise, access, drainage, cable routes and the effect on neighbours or a listed property. A certificate alone does not show that the design suits the building.
For a heat pump, ask how the installer will assess radiator output, hot water demand and the position of the outdoor unit. For solar and batteries, ask how the roof, inverter location, cable route and existing electrical supply will be checked. The answers should relate to the property rather than follow a standard package.
Check who carries out each part of the work. Some projects combine electrical installation, plumbing, heating alterations, controls and commissioning. You should know which company is responsible for the complete design and who will return if two parts of the system do not work together. Clear responsibility matters more than a long list of isolated certificates.
Before work starts, ask to see:
- the installer’s current certificates and the scope of work each one covers;
- evidence of relevant training for the proposed solar, battery or heat pump equipment;
- the proposed system design, including the main assumptions behind its size;
- confirmation of who will complete the electrical testing, commissioning and notifications;
- details of the handover documents, operating instructions and warranties;
- a written quotation showing what is included and what could require additional work.
A good handover should leave you with test results, commissioning information, certificates, manuals and details of the settings used. It should also explain how to use the controls and what to do if the system reports a fault.

A certificate should match the work being proposed, not simply the word “renewables”. Check whether it belongs to the company carrying out the installation, whether it is current and which activities it covers. An individual’s training may not cover the design, electrical testing or commissioning of the complete system.
Ask who remains responsible if the installation combines several trades. The same company should be able to explain how the design, installation, testing and notifications fit together. At handover, the paperwork should identify the system installed, record the commissioning checks and show which qualified person completed each relevant part. This gives you something practical to verify, rather than relying on an impressive list of certificates.
