Can renewable energy grants be combined with other funding?
Sometimes. A renewable energy grant may be combined with other funding, but the rules depend on the scheme, technology, property and costs already covered. We can help you check the eligible work and plan the funding before you commit to an installation.
Renewable funding can sometimes be combined, but the same cost cannot usually be claimed twice. A grant may contribute towards an eligible installation, while your own funds, a loan or another approved scheme covers different costs. The rules depend on the technology, the property and the funding provider.
Government grants and other schemes
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is intended to support an eligible heat pump installation. It cannot normally be combined with another government grant for the same heat pump or the same installation costs. A separate source of money may still be possible for work outside the grant-funded installation, but the scheme administrator must allow it.
Solar panels and battery storage follow different rules. A local authority scheme, energy supplier contribution or other funding arrangement may help with an installation, but its terms could restrict other grants or require the funding to be used for specific equipment. Some schemes are limited to particular households, property types or energy-efficiency measures. Others may only be available through an approved installer or funding provider.
Funding is not always a second grant
- A personal contribution can cover work that a grant excludes.
- A loan or finance arrangement may spread the cost without being another grant.
- A local authority or energy supplier scheme may contribute towards defined improvements.
- Tax treatment may reduce the cost in some circumstances, but this is separate from grant eligibility and can change.
- The Smart Export Guarantee is an export payment for eligible electricity sent to the grid. It is not a grant towards the installation cost.
Export payments should therefore be considered separately from installation funding. MCS certification allows us to make a Boiler Upgrade Scheme application on your behalf where the heat pump and property meet the scheme rules. It also supports eligibility for the Smart Export Guarantee for qualifying renewable electricity installations. Neither arrangement means that every part of the project is funded.
What happens when the installation needs extra work?
Older homes often need work around the main renewable system. A heat pump may require radiator changes, pipework alterations or electrical upgrades. Solar panels may need scaffold access, consumer unit work or roof repairs. A battery may need changes to the electrical installation.
Grant rules usually define which equipment and installation costs qualify. They do not automatically cover every improvement needed to make the property ready. We separate eligible and non-eligible items in the quotation, so you can see which cost each funding source is intended to meet.
For example, a grant might contribute towards the qualifying heat pump installation, while you fund radiator alterations that fall outside the scheme. That does not make the whole project grant-funded, and the arrangement must not claim the same work twice.
We check the funding before work starts
- We identify the proposed system and the work needed at the property.
- We check the current rules for each grant or funding route.
- We ask whether the property or equipment has received previous public funding.
- We separate eligible costs from additional work in the quotation.
- We confirm what you must pay and what another provider would pay.
- We submit any application that we are permitted to make and retain the relevant paperwork.
Do not assume that funding can be combined because two schemes support different types of improvement. The terms may still restrict previous grants, installer arrangements, payment dates or the equipment included. If another organisation has already offered funding, send us its written terms before accepting the offer. We can then check whether it affects the proposed renewable installation and explain any gap that remains for you to fund.
A funding offer may come with timing conditions. Some providers require approval before equipment is ordered or installation work begins, so starting early can affect eligibility.
