Will renewable energy grants cover the extra work my older home needs?
Renewable energy grants usually contribute towards the eligible renewable installation, not every upgrade an older home may need. We assess items such as insulation, radiators, pipework, electrical capacity and structural work separately, so you can budget for the full project before deciding.
Most renewable energy grants do not cover every improvement an older property needs. They usually contribute towards an eligible renewable system and the work needed to install it. Any separate repairs, upgrades or changes needed to make the property ready may remain yours to fund.
The exact boundary depends on the grant and the technology. A heat pump grant has different rules from funding linked to solar or battery storage. Grant terms can also change, so we check the current requirements before we rely on funding in the quotation.
Work that may fall within the funded installation
- Supplying and fitting the eligible heat pump or other renewable equipment.
- Connecting the system to the existing heating or electrical installation.
- Standard controls, commissioning and the paperwork required by the scheme.
- For a qualifying heat pump installation, the work needed to put that system into operation, where the scheme rules allow it.
That does not mean every related job is included. For example, a heat pump may need larger radiators, altered pipework or an upgraded electrical supply. Those items can be essential to the design but still sit outside the grant contribution.
Insulation and fabric improvements
Older homes often lose more heat through walls, roofs, floors, windows and doors than a modern house. Improving insulation can reduce the heat pump size and help the rooms reach the temperature you expect. It can also make the system more economical to run.
Most renewable energy grants do not automatically pay for all of those improvements. Loft insulation, wall insulation, draught reduction, window replacement and repairs to an old roof may need separate funding. Some schemes may support energy-efficiency work, but eligibility depends on the property, the household and the particular programme.
A solid-wall house, barn conversion or listed building needs careful judgement. External insulation may change the appearance, while internal insulation can reduce room size and affect skirting, sockets and radiators. We identify those consequences before you decide. We do not assume that adding insulation is straightforward or suitable for every wall.
Electrical and heating upgrades
An older consumer unit, undersized cable or limited incoming supply can affect a solar PV, battery or heat pump installation. Rewiring, replacing a consumer unit or upgrading the supply may be necessary for safety. The grant for the renewable equipment does not necessarily pay for that wider electrical work.
The same applies to the heating system. A heat pump survey considers heat loss room by room, radiator output, pipe sizes, cylinder capacity and the position of the outdoor unit. If the existing radiators cannot deliver enough heat at the lower flow temperatures used by a heat pump, we may recommend replacements. If old pipework restricts flow, parts of it may need changing.
Your existing oil or LPG boiler may also need isolating, removing or altering. An off-gas-grid property can have additional fuel tanks, flues and pipework to consider. We show those items separately, so the grant does not make the overall cost appear lower than it is.
Roof repairs, structural work and access
Solar panels need a sound roof, safe access and a suitable position for the array. A grant normally does not turn roof repairs, replacement tiles, strengthening work or a full roof renewal into funded renewable installation work. If the roof needs attention, carrying out that work first may be the sensible order.
Heat pumps bring different practical considerations. The outdoor unit needs a suitable location, a stable base and a route for pipework and electrical connections. Moving drains, removing an obstruction, repairing a wall or making substantial building alterations may be additional work. We explain what is needed and why before work starts.
How we separate the grant from the rest of the quotation
- We inspect the property and establish which renewable system could work there.
- We record the upgrades needed for safety, performance and compliance.
- We check which parts match the current grant rules.
- We show the eligible contribution and the remaining project cost separately.
- We agree the order of work before installation begins.
This matters because a grant application is not approval for every item on a quotation. It also does not remove the need to deal with unsafe wiring, failed roof coverings or unsuitable heating infrastructure. We will tell you if an improvement is essential, advisable or simply a separate option.
For a qualifying heat pump installation, our MCS certification allows us to make a Boiler Upgrade Scheme application on your behalf. It also means an eligible installation can support an application for the Smart Export Guarantee where the relevant requirements are met. Neither point means that unrelated building or electrical work becomes grant-funded.
Solar PV and battery funding has its own rules, and there is no single grant that covers every property or every type of equipment. We check the current position for the system being considered rather than treating a grant as guaranteed. We then work out the cost of the complete job, including any work the property needs before the renewable equipment can be commissioned.
If the additional work makes the project unaffordable or unsuitable, we will explain that before you commit. You may choose to complete preparatory work first, reduce the scope, postpone the renewable installation or decide that another system fits the property better. The important figure is the total cost of a safe, workable installation, not the grant amount on its own.
An older home does not automatically need every possible upgrade before renewable work can begin. The important distinction is between work that makes the installation safe and workable, and improvements that could be completed later.
