Which certifications should a renewable energy installer hold?

A renewable energy installer should hold MCS certification for solar panels, battery storage and heat pumps, with NICEIC registration for associated electrical work. MCS means we can apply for a Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant on your behalf where eligible, and your installation can qualify for the Smart Export Guarantee.

The key certification for a renewable energy installer is MCS, but it should not be the only thing you check. The installer also needs the right electrical, heating or plumbing competence for the system being fitted, suitable insurance, and a clear process for design, commissioning and handover.

A certificate on its own does not prove that an installer is suitable for every type of work. Check that the company’s certification covers the technology you are considering, such as solar PV, battery storage or heat pumps. It should also be current and held by the business carrying out the installation, rather than by a separate company that has no involvement in the work.

Look for certification that matches the whole installation

A renewable energy system often crosses several trades. Solar panels and batteries involve electrical design, protection and testing. A heat pump involves heating design, pipework, controls and electrical connections. Older homes may need changes to radiators, consumer units or incoming supplies before the new equipment can work properly.

Ask who will carry out each part of the job. If another company or subcontractor is involved, find out who takes responsibility for the design, testing, notifications and final paperwork. A single named installer should remain accountable for the completed system.

For electrical work, NICEIC or ECA membership provides a useful indication that the company works to recognised electrical standards. It should still explain what testing is included and what certificates you will receive. Heat pump projects need more than an installer who can connect the unit. The design should account for heat loss, emitter sizes, pipework, controls and the position of the outdoor unit. If an existing boiler is being retained, replaced or connected to the new system, the engineer’s registration must cover that type of heating work.

Check the design process, not just the badges

A credible installer will survey the property before recommending equipment. That survey should consider the building fabric, insulation, room sizes, roof orientation, shading, electrical capacity and the way the home is currently heated.

Your property may have solid walls, older radiators, an oil boiler or an LPG system. Those details affect the design and running costs. We use the survey to identify required upgrades rather than assuming that existing equipment will suit the new system.

Ask for the proposed equipment, system size, location, controls and assumptions in writing. A quote that names only a panel, battery or heat pump does not show whether the design is suitable. It should also identify scaffolding, access equipment, alterations, commissioning and removal of old equipment where relevant.

Planning and building requirements can vary with the property and the installation. Listed buildings, conservation areas, shared roofs and unusual cable routes need particular care. The installer should explain which checks apply and who will deal with any required notifications.

Ask about training and practical experience

Renewable technology changes quickly, but the installation still depends on sound electrical and heating practice. Ask how the engineers are trained and whether the people surveying the work are involved in installing and commissioning it.

Experience with older and rural properties is especially useful when the home is off the gas grid or has restricted access. An installer who understands oil, LPG, solid-wall construction and barn conversions is more likely to identify practical issues before work starts. Our engineers and electricians are directly employed, and we train apprentices within the business rather than passing the work to an unknown team.

Confirm insurance and aftercare

The installer should hold suitable public liability insurance and employers’ liability insurance where it employs staff. Ask to see confirmation if it is not included in the quotation or company information. Professional indemnity cover may also be relevant where the company is responsible for system design.

Find out what happens after commissioning. You should receive operating instructions, test results, warranties, certificates and details of the equipment installed. The handover should explain how to use the controls, monitor generation or battery charging, and identify a fault.

Questions worth asking before you appoint an installer

  • Is the company’s MCS certification current and relevant to the proposed technology?
  • Which parts of the design and installation will the named company carry out?
  • Who is responsible for electrical testing, heating commissioning and notifications?
  • What changes might the property need before the equipment can be installed?
  • Which certificates, manuals and warranties will you receive at handover?
  • What insurance does the installer hold?
  • Is every inclusion and exclusion shown in the written quotation?

Check that the business named on the certificate is the business named in your contract. If another company holds the certification, ask exactly what it does and who remains responsible for the design, installation and final records. That distinction matters if you need help after the system has been commissioned.
