Can solar panel servicing be carried out on older properties?
Yes. We can service solar panels on older properties by checking the existing panels, roof, cabling and inverter for safe, compatible operation. If equipment is obsolete or unsafe, we explain the repair or upgrade options before any further work.
Age does not prevent a property from having its solar panels serviced. The important factors are the condition of the roof, the type of system installed and whether the equipment can be reached without putting people or the building at risk.
Older homes often have roof coverings that need more care than modern concrete tiles. Slate, handmade tiles and repaired areas can crack if someone walks on them. We plan the inspection around the roof construction and use suitable access equipment where needed, rather than treating every roof in the same way.
Historic or listed properties may also have restrictions on visible equipment and external alterations. Routine servicing is usually different from changing the system, but repairs or replacements can affect the appearance of the building. If a proposed change may need consent, we explain that before work starts.
On an older installation, the original records may be incomplete or no longer match the equipment on the roof. We identify the panels, inverter and protection equipment, then record what we find. This gives you a clearer basis for future maintenance, insurance discussions or an upgrade decision.
The electrical installation may have changed since the panels were fitted. Older homes can have consumer units, earthing arrangements or labels that need attention before testing can be completed safely. That does not automatically mean the whole property needs rewiring. We separate essential safety work from improvements that can wait, so you can make an informed decision.
We also look for signs that the system has aged unevenly. These can include:
- cracked or discoloured panels;
- loose or weathered roof fixings;
- water entering around roof penetrations;
- damaged insulation or exposed conductors;
- corrosion around external equipment;
- fault warnings or reduced monitoring data; and
- vegetation, dirt or bird activity affecting the array.
Cleaning is not automatically required. We assess whether dirt or organic growth is materially affecting the panels and whether cleaning can be carried out without damaging the roof or equipment. We will not recommend it simply because the system is old.
Some older systems use equipment that is no longer supported by its manufacturer. If a component fails, an identical replacement may not be available. We explain whether a repair is practical, whether a compatible part can be used, or whether an upgrade would be the more sensible route. Any proposed change is considered alongside the roof, electrical installation and your plans for the property.
Battery storage can add another consideration. An older solar PV system may need additional control equipment or electrical work before a battery can be connected. Servicing can establish whether the existing installation is suitable for that discussion, but it does not commit you to an upgrade.
Properties heated by oil or LPG, and homes with older solid-wall construction, can still have suitable solar PV. The age and heating type of the building do not by themselves prevent servicing. We consider the actual condition of the installation and the practical limits of the property.
After the visit, we explain what is working properly, what needs attention and what can be monitored. If the system needs repair or replacement work, we provide a written quotation before that work begins. You can then decide whether to keep the existing installation running, carry out necessary safety work or plan a wider upgrade.
On an older home, the safest inspection may begin at the inverter and isolators rather than with someone walking across the roof. If the array sits on a fragile roof, barn or outbuilding, we plan access around the building and the equipment.
We check the system in stages, using generation data and accessible equipment before deciding whether closer roof inspection is needed. That limits unnecessary disturbance and gives you a clear explanation of any work the installation requires.
