How long does solar panel servicing take?

A routine solar panel service is normally completed during one visit. Larger systems, difficult roof access, battery storage or faults that need attention can make the appointment longer.

There is no fixed duration for solar panel servicing. A straightforward system with safe access and no faults can usually be dealt with within the planned appointment. A service takes longer when we need to investigate poor generation, test the inverter in detail or inspect equipment that is difficult to reach.

The size of the array is only one factor. We also consider the inverter location, battery storage, roof access, the condition of the cabling and isolators, and whether the system has reported a fault. A ground-mounted array may be simpler to inspect than panels on a steep or awkward roof. An older installation may need more testing if its records are incomplete or its components show signs of wear.

During the service, we work through the system rather than looking only at the panels. We inspect the visible panels, mounting equipment and cable routes for damage or movement. We check the inverter, isolators and other accessible electrical connections. We compare the system’s operation with the information available from the inverter or monitoring platform, where that information is available.

Your generation may have fallen without the panels looking damaged. Dirt, shading, a failed optimiser, an inverter fault or a problem with the electrical connection can all affect output. We use the inspection and electrical tests to narrow down the cause. If the issue needs further repair, we explain what we have found before carrying out additional work.

Some services take longer because testing cannot stop at the roof. If the inverter shows an error, we may need to trace the fault through the isolators and cables. If battery storage is connected, we may also need to consider how it is charging, discharging and communicating with the solar system. That extra investigation is separate from a basic visual check.

Access can also affect the appointment. We need a safe route to the inverter and any other equipment that forms part of the system. Roof work may depend on the roof layout and the condition of the access arrangements. We will not treat an unsafe route as a reason to rush the inspection; we will explain what further access or equipment is needed instead.

At the end, we explain whether the system is operating as expected, identify any defects and set out recommended repairs. If the service finds an issue that cannot be resolved during the appointment, the time needed for the next stage depends on the part required and the complexity of the repair. You should receive a clear explanation of the work rather than an unexplained extension to the visit.

For that reason, a servicing appointment should not be judged by its length alone. A careful inspection that identifies an intermittent inverter or cabling fault may take longer than a routine check, but it can prevent a small problem from continuing unnoticed and affecting generation.
